Fishing Guide Cliff Thornton’s Top 3 Lake Tawakoni Hybrid Striper Lures

We striper fish Lake Tawakoni over 300 days a year and have our favorite lures! Here is our list of our Top 3 Lake Tawakoni Hybrid Striper Lures.  First, let’s discuss why Lake Tawakoni fishes a bit different from Lake Texoma!  Lake Tawakoni is a much smaller lake than Texoma.  Lake Tawakoni has 38,000 acres versus Lake Texoma 90,000 acres!  Tawakoni has a lot of standing timber in the middle of the lake and big striper live there year round.  Lake Texoma has more water for the striper to hide in and they will stay on the move year round.  If you want to catch big Hybrid Striper on Tawakoni you must fish the timber!  Yes, you can catch Striper in open water on humps and wind blown points, but the big boys live in the trees!

#1 Slab Spoon Lures

If you Striper Fish in Texas, you better have a few Slab Spoon Lures in the tackle box! If you Striper Fish Tawakoni you will need a one and a half ounce Slab Spoon Lure in Silver and one in Chartreuse. Keep it simple with two colors and really one weight! If you bring 3/4oz and 1oz slab spoons to Lake Tawakoni you will catch White Bass and not many Hybrid Striper! The threadfin and gizzard shad on Lake Tawakoni are big, bring big slabs if you like to catch big fish!

#2 Flutter Spoons

Big Flutter Spoons catch big Striper! Yes, throw the eight in flutter spoon, don’t be afraid! We will do a blog on how to fish Flutter Spoons this summer but keep a few 4.5″ and 8″ spoons in your tackle box! We start catching Striper in March on Spoons, and when the fish key in on big gizzard shad spoons rock! Don’t worry about the color, chrome is the only one you need in two sizes! If you see Hybrid Striper pushing shad out of the water, throw the 4.5″ flutter spoon near the surfacing shad and let the spoon sink for a few feet! Reel as fast as you can and then stop and throw slack in line! This will put big Hybrid Striper in the net!

#3 Sassy Shad Paddle Tail Swimbait

If you don’t have 4 inch Silk Chartreuse, Sassy Shad, you are missing the boat on catching a big striper on Tawakoni! You can fish every color you like, but on Lake Tawakoni Silk Chartreuse is king! You may want a smaller profile paddle tail swimbait as well, but silk chartreuse is the best color! Keep a wide selection of jig heads with a good black platinum hook! if the hook is not black, put it back! You can start catching hybrid striper in 5 feet of water from March until November. Here are the popular swimbait jig head weights; 1/4oz, 1/2oz, 3/4oz, and 1oz to fish the deep water! If the wind is big, a heavier jig head will help!
